Creosote: what your fires leave behind
Every wood fire sends unburned compounds up the flue, and where the smoke cools, they condense on the liner as creosote. It accumulates in layers, and its defining property is the whole problem: creosote is fuel, deposited inside the one part of your house built to contain fire but never to host one. Flue fires burn past two thousand degrees and crack clay liners in a single event.
The three stages
First-stage creosote is flaky soot that brushes out easily. Second stage is harder, tar-like flakes that need real mechanical cleaning. Third stage is glazed: a hardened, shiny coating from repeated condensation, the most flammable form and the hardest to remove, sometimes needing specialized treatment. Sweeping frequency is what keeps a flue living in stage one.
Why this climate builds it faster
Creosote condenses where smoke meets cold, and South Sound flues start cold and damp most of the year. Add the local temptation of marginally seasoned wood, moisture-heavy fuel that burns cool and smoky, and the recipe favors buildup. How much creosote is dangerous?
Industry practice calls for cleaning at roughly an eighth of an inch of buildup, less if glazed. Past that, each fire is burning under a fuel-lined flue.
Do creosote sweeping logs work?
Chemical logs can loosen deposits but remove nothing. They are a supplement between mechanical sweeps at best, never a substitute for one.
